THE DRAGON
This type of dragon was more recently included in the iconography of popular Serrano embroidery, possibly dating from the second half of the 20th century. What makes it special is that it is always embroidered in shades of a single colour (blue, green, red), usually without being unaccompanied by other animal or plant motifs.
The dragon is one of a number of imaginary, extraordinary, mysterious and legendary creatures that appear in Serrano embroidered cloths. These figures populated the mythology of different ancient civilizations and were often depicted in their traditional objects in popular culture.
One of the great values of popular embroidery in the Sierra de Francia is the cultural syncretism (fusion of different cultures) and the skills in textile craftsmanship which have been passed down by Serrano women to the next generations.
