PAIRED LIONS
Animal or zoomorphic motifs are, together with the floral motifs that accompany them, the main protagonists of the iconographic universe of Serrano embroidery.
The lion is perhaps one of the most frequently represented zoomorphic motifs in popular Serrano embroidery. Sometimes it appears facing the Tree of Life or if there is a pair of lions, they are often depicted with their backs to each other, as in this case.
It is usually the central figure of the piece, although it can also be found in borders alternating with other motifs.
Sometimes the lioness is depicted suckling her cubs.
The lion represents power, wisdom, justice and in all Western cultures it is usually associated with gold and the sun. Its vigilant attitude is manifested in its ability to always be aware and to never close its eyes to the truth.
