The Griffin is usually a heraldic symbol, like the lion, the unicorn and several others. It traditionally represents ingenuity, strength, courage and vigilance.
It is a magical creature, with the head, claws and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. Sometimes it is represented with a long snake tail. Griffins have been mentioned since ancient times by writers such as Pliny and Aeschylus, who noted that they embody both the symbolic qualities of the lion and of the eagle. The griffin is the King of the Birds and the Lord of the Wind combined with the King of the Beasts and the Lord of the Earth.
