The griffin is commonly an emblem in heraldry, like the unicorn, the lion, and others. It conventionally represents ingenuity, strength, courage, and vigilance.
It is a mythical creature with the head, claws, and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. Sometimes, it is depicted with a long serpent-like tail. Griffins have been mentioned since ancient times by Pliny and Aeschylus, combining the symbolic qualities of the lion and the eagle: the king of birds and lord of the air united with the king of beasts and lord of the earth.
