The process of Serrano embroidery begins with drawing motifs on a canvas. With a braid stitch, usually in black, the designers mark the outlines. Afterwards, the motifs are filled in by using a wide variety of stitches.

All the stitches used belong to the “satin stitch” embroidery technique, where the thread runs along the front and reverse side of the canvas. Depending on the arrangement of the thread, different “counted-thread stitches” may be used: these are known as loin stitches, full-eyed stitches, fishbone stitches, brick stitches, or torrinas stitches..
